Sweet Indulgence: Avocado Drinks

If you have siblings, then you know that friendly sibling competitions are inevitable!  They start at a young age and continue on into adulthood.  The lyrics to the song, “Anything you can do” from the Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun, sum up the competitiveness between siblings to a T.  Although the types of competitions change with age, the ultimate goal is always the same…to be the winner (all in good fun of course)!

Whenever I see avocados, it prompts me to talk about an avocado drink that I grew up with and loved.  My brother has been listening to me talk about this drink for years and years.  Now even though we grew up in the same household, he had never had this drink because he has always hated avocados.  Well, a few weeks ago I get an e-mail from him telling me about how he has just had the most amazing drink ever…an avocado drink!  Miraculously the boy now loves avocados!  He then claims that the version he had is much better than the version I grew up with.  This of course spurred a friendly avocado drink competition.

My Version

My version consists of avocados, milk and sugar.

His Version

His version consists of  avocados, condensed milk and ice.

I entered into this little competition  ready to dislike his version.  I had some serious doubts about the ice in the drink.  I felt it would water down the drink and take away from the taste of the avocados.  However, I have to say I was blown away by his version.  Can you say R E F R E S H I N G!!!??  One sip of his version was like jumping into an ice cold pool on a blistering hot day! WOW!!  The condensed milk, which I thought would be too rich and sweet, was actually just perfect.  As for my version, it was just as delicious.  It was smoother and lighter because it had been made with milk instead of condensed milk.  My version is a little more customizable because you can tweak it to meet your dietary needs and concerns.  For example, you can use a milk type that suits your needs (e.g. whole milk, 2% etc).  Also, you can control the sweetness by adjusting the amount of sugar added to meet your own tastes.

So who was the winner?  Well, our taste-testers decided it was a tie!  Now usually I think that ties are just cop-outs, but this time I agreed with the tie.  It was decided that both versions were absolutely delicious.  However, our taste-testers felt that my brother’s version would be more of a once-in-a-while treat because of the condensed milk, whereas my version could be more of an everyday treat because it was a tad bit healthier with the milk.  But, don’t let us decide for you.  Give both versions a try and decide for yourself!

RECIPES

Note:  recipes do not contain exact amounts.  You have to just play around with the ingredients to suit your tastes

My version (on the left hand side of the photo):

Place avocados (about 2) into a blender, add milk and sugar and blend.  Taste and make adjustments to the sugar so that it is sweet enough for you.  Add more milk if it is too thick.  It should be the consistency of a milkshake.

His version (on the right hand side of the photo):

Place the avocados (about 2-3) into a blender.  Add the condensed milk (about 3/4 of the can) and blend together.  Taste and add more condensed milk depending on how sweet you  want it.  Add the ice (about 1.5-2 trays of cubed ice) and blend until the ice is crushed into small bits.  Again, the consistency should be that of a milkshake.  Serve immediately.
